The council offices, designed by Kraaijvanger Architects, has a design and look that matches what the municipal organisation strives to be: open, transparent and accessible. The design was accomplished from a C2C perspective and a circular building scenario. This is the first Limburg city region that has fully embraced the Cradle to Cradle principles.

Together with the Venlo municipality and the C2C ExpoLAB, the objectives were set with respect to the building that needed to be realised. The choice of materials was very important, but there was also a lot of attention given to air purification, energy use and the building's water cycle. Materials that are 100% recyclable were consciously looked at when choices had to be made.

From the Cradle to Cradle design concept it is no coincidence that a Derako C2C certified ceiling system was chosen for this building. DERAKO constructs and works according to the Cradle-to-Cradle principle that not only looks at our present needs but also at the possibilities for future generations. Next to a C2C certification for all products, Derako also has various other certificates, including FSC® and an ISO14001 certified environmental management system.

Accoya – durable with hard wood characteristics

Because of the use of Accoya wood in the Derako ceiling system, even more added value was created in the field of sustainability. The Accoya wood is produced from PEFC or FSC-certified fast-growing pine and a unique preservation process ensures that the material obtains properties that can be compared with tropical hardwood. This material is not only rot resistant, but also very dimensionally stable.

C2C goes even deeper for this project

From the C2C philosophy Derako looked , in cooperation with several parties, very hard at the dimensions of the timber and also at the position of the light fittings and other facilities in the ceiling. Because of this, efficient wood was purchased and processed with a minimal loss of materials. Besides, all the elements of the grill ceiling were packet in specially designed wooden crates which were taken back for recycling immediately.

Natural perception

The entire open structure of the grill ceiling system fits in well with the 'open, transparent and accessible' vision of the design.  Accoya wood also has a natural and warm charisma. The addition of natural elements, such as two cork-oak trees inside the building's integrated green house, ensure further strengthening of the 'natural' perception within the building.
