In 2016, a new shopping centre opened at the Vergotedok canal in Brussels, named Docks Bruxsel. This shopping centre is built on the oldest industrial site of Brussels, where long ago the famous stove factory Godis was situated. Now, the site is home to an ultra modern shopping centre with its own unique allure. It starts right from the entrance, which looks impressive thanks to the round shapes.
Our Belgian sales partner collaborated closely with the contractor, Besix, and the architects from Art & Build Brussel, to realise this project.
Given that the entire shopping centre was BREEAM Excellent certified, they opted for the use of FSC® certified Pine wood. The solid wood Derako Grill system that was used offers a beautiful and natural added value to the interior of this shopping centre.
The Grill system was installed in the central interior hall. There, the Grill system serves as a canopy over the top and front side above the various shops. In total, the Derako system covers about 1006 m2 in a fire resistant application. In this ceiling, the choice was made for a dimensioning with the wood part being 20 mm thick and 50 mm high. The spacing in the ceiling is 55 mm and in the walls 53 mm.
The particular aspect of this project was the oval shape inside the building. This causes the Grill system to end in a curve. To ensure the corners properly align with each other, these were applied in a mitre. In this design, the architect used special fitting panels for the lighting armatures. The fitting panels were cut to size by Derako in the factory, with special attention for the angular displacement. The wood is finished in the colour Cherry, creating a warm, luxurious, and inviting atmosphere in the shopping centre as well.
