The new Village Hall in Zwanenburg has had a modern redesign with a clear reference to its rural surroundings. The exterior of the building was designed as a series of linked houses by Heren5 Architecten. On the inside, the central ‘living room’ is mainly accessible and warm, with its elegant wooden trusses and wooden wall cladding.
The linked houses are very different in shape without loosing it’s uniformity. The ‘living room’ is in the centre of the complex and borders the other rooms. These include the library, pool room, sports hall and meeting rooms. A prominent tower has also been added. This is based on the idea that a church would one day be built on site.
A lot of wood was used for the entire construction and furnishing. This extremely sustainable building material makes the building feel warm and accessible. The facade on the parking side is cladded with finely-sawed Douglas wood. In the building itself, the Derako solid wood linear wall system was used with the American Yellow Poplar wood. Other eyecatchers are the large wooden trusses behind the glass facades that give the ‘living room’ an impressive appearance. On the inside, the trusses were made of spruce wood and finished with whitewash coating. There is also one truss outside which is made of larch.
The bar, which is fitted with the Derako linear wall system at both the top and bottom end, defines the interior of the 'living room'. This wood type has a fine, even structure and provides a lively appearance with its diverse shading. The other walls are also lined with the Derako linear system. The system consists of solid wood parts which are installed invisibly using the Derako suspension system. The profile with clips is very suitable for curved - organically shaped - surfaces. For this project, the rails for the bar, as well as other walls, were delivered prefabricated in the correct radii.
As with this project, most Derako systems are custom made project solutions, with an integral system warranty, where the architect's design is leading. In addition to customization, Derako also offers standardised products, such as the new Linear BaseLine system. This provides a solution for every space, need and budget which makes it possible to apply the unique solid wood material in even more building designs. All systems are C2C Silver certified and contribute to maintaining credits within BREEAM and LEED. The Derako consultants will be happy to provide you with more information.

Derako is a Business supporter of the WWF Trillion Tree campaign. This campaign will restore part of the Atlantic rainforest with the aid of corporate financial support. Based on the idea of "giving forests back to the earth", the plan is to protect and/or plant one trillion trees by 2050.
Forests are essential. They provide clean air, water and food. Forests are some of our most important allies in the fight against climate change. Trees store CO2 in their trunks, roots and the soil. Unfortunately, forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. The most common causes of deforestation are agriculture, livestock farming, mining and infrastructural projects. Restoring and protecting forests increases CO2 absorption capacity and restores biodiversity. This gives plants and animals space to grow and live. Trees also purify water and reduce soil erosion, which in the longer term also benefits the earth.
The Atlantic rainforest is a beautiful area that stretches across Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. It is home to an unparalleled number of animal species, including the most colourful birds, more than 400 species of trees, and the jaguar. More than 80% of this rainforest has disappeared. WWF will plant seedlings here together with SAVE (the Brazilian bird protection organisation).
And this brings us to 1 trillion trees, which together make up important, living forests.
Derako strives towards maximum sustainability and contributes to the creation of a circular economy. The WWF project of course fits perfectly within this vision. As an organisation, Derako has an ISO14001 environmental management system. All products are Cradle-to-Cradle Silver certified and we stimulate the use of FSC and PEFC certified wood types. In striving towards sustainability, both in terms of products and production, many systems contribute to acquiring credits within BREEAM and LEED.

Where Derako previously specialised in the supply of custom and project-based Grill systems only, the manufacturer and supplier of solid wood systems has now developed a new product line; the Derako Grill BaseLine. A standardised and cost-effective solution that allows the unique properties of solid wood to be applied to even more structure designs.
With the Grill BaseLine system, you can choose from fifteen standard sizes and four types of wood. Due to the standardisation, our system is exceedingly cost-effective, and we are generally able to produce materials quickly. Orders are placed per panel, with you specifying the exact numbers and selecting the desired panel length and fitting, to create a wall or ceiling with a special, yet natural, look.
As with all Derako systems, the Grill BaseLine system is C2C Silver certified and manufactured using 100% solid wood. Solid wood is not only very environmentally friendly, CO2 neutral and recyclable, it also offers a lot of added value on many different fronts. The material has a natural look and feel, with a calming effect, and combines well with a variety of other materials. A better experience is also created by its great acoustic properties. All these properties can positively affect health, communication, safety, productivity and learning achievements.
The standard finish of the Grill BaseLine is transparent, to protect the wood. As an option, the wood can be finished in a colour of choice or with a fire-retardant treatment (EN13964). With an additional tail strip on the panel, you can create hidden panels for, for example, island applications.
Characteristics of the Grill BaseLine system:
The Derako range of 8 product lines offers many ways to apply solid wood in your project. Standard and cost-effective solutions, but perfect-fit custom-made ceilings and walls can also be manufactured to your project specifications, a wide selection of wood types and measurements, or very special curved shapes. Soon, all exact information about these product lines will be available to you on the new and improved Derako website.
Take a look at the brochure below for more information about the Grill-baseline. Ask our Derako advisors about the possibilities and the price list. They will be happy to assist you.
The new Traveller Pavilion in Cumulus Park Amsterdam, with its soft shapes and distinctive wooden ceiling, has been designed to fit seamlessly into its surroundings. In an up-and-coming district of Amsterdam Zuidoost, the pavilion is an inspiring and stimulating destination for campus staff, entrepreneurs, local residents, students and visitors. The Powerhouse Company design includes a combination of a clear glass façade and natural materials and colours, which creates a subtle connection between the inside and the outside. Derako’s solid wooden ceiling plays an important role in this connection.
The ceiling for this project, which runs from the inside to the outside, has a surface area of 704 m2 and is made of Siberian larch wood and following the Derako open linear system. The challenge of the project was mainly in the outside ceiling. Due to the double-sided curvature in the design, all parties consulted at an early stage in order to realise this unique shape. Derako first examined whether the lines ran parallel everywhere and from there the entire layout plan was developed. This layout plan was the guideline for bending and installing the profiles to which the wooden slats are attached unnoticeably.
All profiles were prefabricated and numbered by Derako and then delivered to the building site, so that people knew exactly where to place them. By adjusting the dimensions of the slat, the desired slot diffusers could be applied properly. Special hatches were also installed in a number of places according to the drawings, so that it was easy to reach the installations behind them. Everything was worked out and prepared in advance by all the parties involved in the construction process and therefore the assembly went smoothly. During the installation phase, Derako was regularly present on site to find a solution to a number of project-related challenges together with the contractor and the installer. A beautiful end result was achieved thanks to the good cooperation with the installers, and the design that the architect had in mind became reality.
The Derako systems are custom made project solutions, with an integral system guarantee, where the design of the architect is the guiding factor. All systems are C2C Silver certified and contribute to obtaining credits within BREEAM and LEED. In addition to customisation, Derako also has standard products, such as the new Grill BaseLine system. This provides a solution for every space, need and budget where it is possible to apply the unique solid wood raw material in even more building designs..
